Then I can more than likely keep the 28T Rennen that's on the bike now? I'm currently running the SS w/ a 12T-28T gearing on 26" wheels and love it for jumping but that'd kill me riding around town.

38 is more for the down hill. around town and getting up some hills a 27 is going to be alot easier for sure.

Hey on your Jamis I would do a 32 or 34 for more speed in the front with a smaller road cassette like 11-27 or around that range and then get a short cage derailler and it will be out of the way.
